Scott Gregory Lovendahl, 61
NYPD detective, beloved family man, 'a fighter and a hero'
Scott Gregory Lovendahl, long-time Staten Island resident and retired NYPD detective, died from 9-11 related cancer on Sept. 14, 2019, at his home in Randall Manor. Scott was 61 and surrounded by his loving family, including his wife, brother, beloved grandchildren, son-in-law and two daughters at the time of his passing.
He will be remembered as a gentle man who was devoted to family and friends, for his generosity, love of sports and animals, and his great sense of humor.
A first-generation Norwegian, Scott was born in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, in what was then the Norwegian section of the borough. He moved with his family to Staten Island at the young age of two, living on Stobe Avenue in Grant City for most of his childhood. He attended Egbert Junior High, New Dorp High School, and the New York City Police Academy.
Scott served in the Police Department from 1984 to 2004, starting his career as a police officer on the streets of Brooklyn South and retiring as a detective investigator. In 2008, he married Juliet, the love of his life.
Scott will be survived by Juliet, his son, Scott Gunner Lovendahl, two daughters, Kimberly Marie Taverna, and Lauren Victoria Donohue, as well as three grandchildren, Ryan and Charleigh Donohue and Evalina Taverna and his brother Paul Lovendahl. He will also be missed by his two sons-in-law, including fellow police officer Carmine Taverna and McKee Tech High School coach Charles Donohue as well as his in-laws and many friends and neighbors.
Scott's family says that he fought a gallant fight against the disease that claimed his life, playing golf and bowling within weeks of his death. He was a fighter and a hero.
A memorial service, followed by a police ceremony, will be held on Sept. 27 at 10 am at the Christ Episcopal Church, 76 Franklin Ave., Staten Island.
In lieu of flowers, if you wish to make a donation in Scott's name, please consider Answer the Call (answerthecall.org) whose mission is to support families of NYC police officers and other first responders killed in the line of duty.
