Obituary of Gretchen J. Reed
On June 23,2024 Gretchen J. Reed departed this earth and received eternal life. Born August 17th 1932 to Herbert and Emily (Jones) Reed , Mother and Father of six children. Herbert Reed Jr., Kenneth L. Reed, Gretchen J. Reed, Maynard C. Reed, Alphonso L.K. Reed, Wyndham A. Reed. All were born at Monmouth Medical Hospital in Long Branch, New Jersey. Gretchen graduated Atlantic Highlands H.S. in 1952. Gretchen was very athletic , playing basketball and cheerleading for years. She played softball with the Atlantic Highlands Eaglettes all girls team and kept score, reporting the results to Charlie Parish at The Asbury Park Press. Herbert Reed and Herbert Reed Jr. founded the Eaglettes.Gretchen also completed Income Tax preparations and Real Estate. When Gretchen graduated H.S. she became interested in Fashion and dance. She learned to play the piano from her cousin and neighbor Mrs. Arger Baker. She was always hosting family cookouts celebrating her Moms Birthday and her Parents on the 4th of July! Gretchen attended Rider University on Scholarship, majoring in Business Education. After graduating Gretchen taught at Patterson H.S. alongside Joe Clark ( Eastside High fame from the Movie " Lean on Me") who graduated from Seton Hall University. Gretchen continued her studies and graduated form California State in Long Beach, California where she majored in Special Education in the Doctoral Program. In addition, Gretchen worked at Ft. Monmouth Army base, and Maguire Air Force base where she taught Business Education. Gretchen followed her parents religiously and attended Quinn and Chapel A.M.E. Church in Hillside NJ. She contributed to her church by purchasing windows, seating and anything else needed. She joined The Veterans Auxiliary Hwy 35 in Middletown NJ and assisted her brothers in receiving USA SFC Gold Star Medals from the NJ State Veterans Association at Monmouth University. Lastly Gretchen was the life and blood of H. Reed and Sons Trucking, she was present when most of our family was called to serve our Country, attend College and follow our Dreams! She will be sorely Missed.
